About
Our Store
The design of the Treehouse store is guided by 3 principles
- our commitment to children
- our commitment to the environment
- our commitment to quality and design
We have too much pride and respect for ourselves and our environment not to question everything, every step of the way. We made our design decisions based on our commitments and have an incredible space to show for it. Admittedly, we may have driven the architects a bit crazy, but in the end we have a beautiful, functional store that proves we can make informed choices with minimal environmental impact.
Add to this one of the darlings of the international design world – Dutch designer Tejo Remy. Tejo Remy was indispensable to the founding of the world famous group Droog Design. He has created many pivotal works such as his Rag Chair and Milk Bottle lamps. Remy’s You can’t lay down your memory chest of drawers is a part of the NY Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection. He has since founded his own firm with design partner René Veenhuizen to work on a project basis.
His organic, modular and practical leaf shelving system was Treehouse’s first choice for the shelving and hanging display space. The decouper, interlocking leaves act as shelves when folded down. Metal branches made by local artisans were added as racks from which the clothes hang. In the closed position, the leaves adorn the walls and provide a resting place for the eye – a subtle and natural form. Floor to ceiling, covering half the store, this impressive and functional piece of art is Tejo’s second installation worldwide. Fittingly, the first was conceptualized for the Netherland’s Child Welfare office.
We find that all too often we bring our children into a great store selling alluring children’s products and there is nothing for the children to do there. They are not allowed to touch anything, and it’s quite obvious that the store is not for them at all. Treehouse is a place, much like an actual treehouse, that is a joy for children to play in and explore. Many important features of the store were designed especially for the children. There is an incredible treehouse which is certainly what all adults would’ve wished for in their own childhoods, an entire chalkboard wall that they can draw all over and lots of open space and child-scale furniture to engage them in all kinds of imaginative play. Here, the children are certinly allowed to "touch". The low, open shelving encourages interaction with the objects on display. The products are all for sale and not show and can all be tested in a natural environment.
